Your Fn1000 time clock can be programmed to automatically adjust for DST, but the settings must be updated annually since DST dates change every year.

If your region observes DST, watch this instructional video or follow the steps below.

If your location observes DST, click here to view the steps to enable DST.

Note:

DST changes at 02:00 AM by default. If you have night shift workers, adjust if necessary. The clock will automatically adjust from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM in the spring from 2:00 AM to 1:00 AM in the fall,

This change affects time cards. Be sure to account for this when calculating hours or adjust the time according to your company's practices to ensure employees are paid for all hours.

HN2: Day Change, Pay Period, and Print Position Adjustments

The HN2 menu controls settings for day change time, pay period configuration, and printing position adjustments (vertical and horizontal). These options help align the time clock with your business schedule and ensure accurate printing on timecards.

Set the Day Change Time (Code 00)

The Day Change Time determines when the clock transitions from one day to the next. By default, this occurs at 12:00 AM, where 11:59 PM is the last minute of the previous day and 12:00 AM marks the start of the new day.

If your business operates past midnight (e.g., a nightclub), you can delay the day change to keep late punches on the same line of the timecard. For example, setting the day change to 4:00 AM ensures all punches before 4 AM remain on the previous day’s line.

  1. When HN2 and code 00 appears on the display, press Enter (Button 3).
  2. Use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to set the hour.
  3. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.
  4. Use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to set the minute.
  5. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

The code on the bottom-left will change to 01: the Pay Period.

Set the Pay Period (Code 01)

The time clock prints punches on one time card per pay period. The first day of the pay period always prints on line 1, regardless of the calendar date. When a new pay period starts, a new card must be used.

Before setting your pay period, watch this video to see where punches appear on a time card for each pay period to ensure you select the best option for your team:

Watch this video to see how to set your pay period or click the drop-downs below for more information and step-by-step instructions.

When code 01 appears in the bottom-left corner of the display under the HN2 menu, you can select one of the following options:

01: No Pay Period (Job Tracking Mode)

Use this mode if you want the time clock to print punches based on the current calendar date without grouping them into pay periods. This is ideal for job tracking.

  • Each punch will print on the line that corresponds to the current date.
  • There is no pay period grouping and time cards will fill based on calendar days.

To set job tracking mode/no pay period:

  1. When code 01 appears, use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select 01.
  2. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

02: Monthly Pay Period.

The time clock will print the first day of the pay period on the first line of the time card.

For example: a monthly pay period starting on the 1st will print the first day of the month on line 1, the second day on line 2, and so on until the end of the month.

Select 02 for the Monthly option, then select the date on which the pay period will start.

To set a monthly pay period:

  1. When code 01 appears, use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select 02.
  2. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.
  3. Press + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select the start day.
  4. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

03: Weekly Pay Period

Each pay period uses the first seven lines of the card and does not use the reverse side.

Select 03 for the Weekly option, then select the day of the week on which the pay period will start.

To set a weekly pay period:

  1. When code 01 appears, use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select 03.
  2. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

  5. Press + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select the start day.
  6. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

05: Semi-monthly Pay Period

For semi-monthly pay periods, you set the paydays - which represent the last day of each pay period - rather than the start dates. This means you define the two end dates per month (for example, the 15th and the last day of the month), and the system calculates the start dates automatically.

Select 05 for the Semi-monthly option, then select the payday option.

Semi-Monthly Pay Period Payday Options

Option Paydays (Last Day of Each Pay Period) 1st Pay Period 2nd Pay Period
01 1st and 16th 2nd - 16th 17th - 1st

  4. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

Print Position Adjustment: Up/Down (Code 02)

If printed punches are not centered vertically, adjust the position using values 0–9:

  • 0 = lowest position
  • 9 = highest position
  • 5 = default (center)

Lower values move printing down; higher values move it up.

To adjust the vertical position:

  1. When code 02 appears, use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select a value (0-9).
  2. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

If printed punches are not centered horizontally, adjust the position using values 0–9:

  • 0 = far left
  • 9 = far right
  • 5 = default (center)

Lower values move printing left; higher values move it right.

To adjust the vertical position:

  1. When code 03 appears, use + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select a value (0-9).
  2. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm.

Recommendation: Leave at default (5) unless alignment is off.

Advanced FN1000 Settings

FN1000 time clocks include advanced features that help customize how punches and alerts are handled:

  • HN3: Alarms
  • HN4: Automatic Column Shifting
  • HN5: Print Color Options

Some settings, such as automatic column shifting, are enabled by default. If you do not plan to use these features, be sure to reset the settings during setup to avoid unexpected behavior.

Click here for the steps to reset the HN3, HN4, and HN5 Menus.

To reset the HN3, HN4, and HN5 menus:

  1. If HN3 is not showing on the screen, press Mode (Button 6) until HN3 appears.
  2. Hold the first OUT(#2) button on the left and the last IN(#5) and OUT(#6) buttons on the right simultaneously for 5 seconds.

  3. Release the buttons and you should see HN1 on the screen.

This will clear all settings in HN2, HN3, and HN4.

HN3: Set Alarms

The alarm feature lets you schedule up to 12 alarms throughout the week using the HN3 menu. Alarms can signal events such as shift start and end times, breaks, lunches, or other custom needs.

  • You can set the alarm duration anywhere from 0 to 60 seconds.
  • A duration of 0 seconds disables the scheduled alarm without removing its configuration.

Planning to use alarms? Click here for setup steps.

When HN3 appears on the display, press Enter (Button 3), to enter the HN3 menu.

You can configure up to 12 alarms (codes 01–12). For each alarm, you will set:

  9. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm and save the alarm. The code on the bottom left will increase.

Repeat the steps for codes 02–12 as needed for each additional alarm or press Mode (Button 6) to move on to HN4.

Important Note

Workwell does not provide or support external bell accessories. If you use an external bell, ensure it has its own power source (AC 100–240V) and follow the wiring diagram printed on the back of the timeclock.

HN4: Set Automatic Column Shifting

The Automatic Column Shifting settings allow the time clock to automatically switch columns based on the time of day. With this feature enabled, employees simply insert their time card and the correct column is chosen automatically.

Automatic column shifting can simplify punching and reduce errors when employees share the same schedule or when scheduled punch times for different shifts do not overlap.

Example for a morning shift:

  • Employees punch in at 6:00 AM: Program the timeclock to select In (column 1) at 5:55 AM.
  • Lunch from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM: Program Out (column 2) at 10:25 AM and In (column 3) at 10:55 AM.
  • End of shift at 2:30 PM: Program Out (column 4) at 2:25 PM.

You can set up to 12 automatic column shifts (codes 01–12) for different times. Additional schedules can be added for other shifts as long as punch times do not conflict.

Planning to use automatic column shifting? Click here for additional information and setup steps.

  1. When HN4 appears on the display, press Enter (Button 3), to enter the HN4 menu.
  2. Press + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select the hour (24-hour format),
  3. Press Enter. The minute will begin to flash.

  6. Scroll through days using + (Button 1) or - (Button 2). A flashing triangle indicates the selected day.
  7. Press Back (Button 4) to toggle a day off/on.
  8. Once all days have been enabled/disabled appropriately, press Enter (Button 3).
  9. Press + (Button 1) or - (Button 2) to select the column for the punch:
    • 01: Column 1
    • 02: Column 2
    • 03: Column 3
    • 04: Column 4
  10. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm and save the column shift. The code on the bottom left will increase.

Repeat the steps for codes 02–12 as needed for each additional column shifts or press Mode (Button 6) to move on to HN5.

What would a punch time conflict look like?

If the afternoon shift punches in at the same time the morning shift returns from lunch, the timeclock cannot select column 1 for the afternoon shift and column 3 for the morning shift at the same time.

Can employees change which column they punch on?

Employees can press the button for the column they want to use at any time. This is useful if they arrive late, take lunch early or late, leave early, or otherwise deviate from their schedule. The manually selected column stays active until:

  • Another column is manually selected, or
  • The next scheduled automatic shift occurs.

Even with automatic shifting, employees should always confirm the correct column is selected before punching by checking the light indicator directly above the IN/OUT buttons.

HN5: Set Color Print Options

By default, the time clock prints black ink starting at midnight (12:00 AM). You can configure it to print red ink at specific times to highlight punches.

  • The time clock can automatically switch between black and red ink based on a programmed schedule.
  • You can set up to 24 color change times per week (codes 01–24).

Example: If morning shift employees are scheduled to punch in at 6:00 AM:

  • Program the clock to print black ink until 6:05 AM.
  • From 6:05 AM to 6:59 AM, print red ink for late punches.
  • After 7:00 AM, switch back to black ink for the rest of the shift.

Additional color changes can be programmed for other shifts, as long as the times don’t overlap.

    • 01: Red
    • 02: Black
  10. Press Enter (Button 3) to confirm and save the color change. The code on the bottom left will increase.

Keep Settings Consistent

Make sure your account settings (such as pay period) match the settings programmed on your time clock.

Important Notes

  • The HN series time clocks do not connect to a network. Punches will not transfer automatically. You will need to manually scan time cards into the mobile app.

Mount the Time Clock (Optional)

After confirming your settings and print alignment, you can mount the device for convenient access. For detailed steps and additional information, visit the Wall Mount the FN1000 article.

Congratulations! You're Ready To Begin Using Your Time Clock

You’ve completed the setup of your FN1000 Non-Calculating Time Clock. Your device is now ready to track time reliably and accurately.

Now that your device is set up, we will cover the most important aspects of the time clock:

  • How your employees will punch
  • What the punches look like and how to interpret time card data
  • What to do at the end of your pay period

Employee Punching

Employees will need to manually punch by inserting their time card into the time clock.

FN1000-Punching-With-Hand.jpg

Your employees may need to press a button before putting in their time card, depending on if you're using Automatic Column Shifting.

If you adjusted your Automatic Column Shift Settings during setup, your employees will not need to press a button. They can simply enter their time card and the punch details will appear on the right line and column.

If you are not using Automatic Column Shifting, your employee will press the button on the top of the time clock that aligns with the column for the punch (In or Out).

Punch Data

How employee punch data appears on your time card depends on your settings. Employee punches will appear on the line of the time card based on the day of the pay period - not the day of the month.

For example:

  • If you have a weekly pay period, punches will occur on lines 1-7.
  • If you have a biweekly pay period, punches will occur on lines 1-14.

For a more detailed example of how punches appear on time card, check out this video:

Adding Punches to the App

The FN1000 Time Clock cannot be synced with the smartphone app. For punches to appear on the app, you will need to either manually enter each punch or scan each time card using the app.

For more information on how to scan timecards, take a look at this short video:

End of Pay Period Processes

If you are not using the uPunch Mobile App, you will need to manually calculate employee hours using their time card data.

If you are using the mobile app, you can scan the time cards using the app, verify all punch details are accurate, and the app does the rest. Simple email a pay period report with the automatically totaled hours and overtime details.

To email a pay period report using the uPunch mobile app:

  1. Tap Time Cards on your mobile app dashboard.
